PURPOSE:

Business as a Profession is an introductory co= urse for students considering a major in the Falls School of Business. In-class discussions, simulations and writing assignments will provide students an i= dea of their options in the field of business. The course is an overview of the various functions of business and explores the implications of viewing busi= ness as a calling and/or vocation.

The purpose is to provide a high performance-learning environment to develop an understanding of: =

&nbs= p;

(1)        The various functions = of business such as social responsibility, marketing, management, human resour= ces, developing products and services, the global environment, finance, accounti= ng, information and technology; and how they are part of the "fabric" of the business, and; therefore, must be understood within the greater context of = the business enterprise.

(2)       A successful career in business need not be incompatible with Biblical teachi= ng. This course discusses how one can integrate faith and business and reach mu= tual success and growth.

 SERVICE PAP= ER:

Service and volunteerism are important responsibilities of employees and managers. People are encouraged to participate in civic and charitable projects in order to give back to the community. Each student is required to find an appropriate serve project= in the community and spend at least two hours serving others.  It may be through Campus Ministrie= s, a student organization, your church or the charity/social service organizatio= n of your choice.  Additionally, in keeping with this philosophy, we will dedicate a class hour to a speaker or= speakers on the topic of service project s.  From the service experience and the class session, students will be = required to write a paper of at least 2 pages in following this format:<= /span>

·         Report on your service experience.  Share the “what, where, when” and reflect upon the experience.  What did you learn about yourself?=   What were the “lessons”= ; of the experience?

·         Explain your position on whether or not “= ;a service mentality” is connected to personal success in business.

·         Discuss what it means to you to be “salt= and light” in your own business career.

·         The paper must be typed, stapled and proofread. Learning how to write properly is part of the college experience, thus you = will be graded on proper use of the English language and content. =

REACTION PAPERS:

Each student must complete and turn in a react= ion paper for two different guest speakers of your choice, for a total of two reaction papers. The paper must follow these guidelines:<= /p>

·= ;      =    Be at least two pages in length, typed & double-spaced, stapled and proofread

·= ;      =    Provide a short sum= mary (not more than one page) of the key points the speaker made and include:

o        Did the speaker say something that surprised, shocked or dismayed you?  Explain

o        What did the speaker say that left you with additional questions?

o        Did the speaker lea= ve you with a “gem” you think is well worth remembering?  If so, what?

o        Name 1-2 business principles you learned about business practices and the business world?

o        Did the speaker increase your interest in his/her area of business?  Why or why not?<= /p>

·= ;      =    Include the speaker’s topic as well as t= he speaker’s correctly-spelled = name
