Biographical Information

A Selective Biography of Dr. James W. Lewis

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I seek to live out the demands of the gospel in the world—although imperfectly.  Central to this lifestyle of Christian discipleship is Jesus’ call to be peacemakers in the world.  Upon my conversion to Christianity and participation in a local congregation, I have sensed a fundamental disconnect between what we Christians often say and what we more frequently do.  My prayerful desire is to speak to this fundamental separation between confession and conduct in our lives with the courage, patience, and hope inspired by the Trinitarian God.  Experiencing shalom, God’s wholeness in all relationships, is a pervasive and guiding theme of my life.  I promote the idea that God’s truthful story of redemption has power to form our lives in more truthful, loving, and peaceful ways.  My family and I worship at and are accountable to the Sherman Street Church of God, Anderson, Indiana.  I find the proclamation and teaching of the Word of God, like honey in the honey comb, to be sweet to the taste.

I am a native of Houston, Texas, the second oldest child of ten children born to Rev. John J. R. and Betty Joyce Lewis.  I am married [for 35 years] to Barbara Kaye and am the father of two beautiful daughters [Andrea and Kimberli] and the grandfather of two equally beautiful granddaughters [Ameris and Nya].  I received my B.S. degree in Mathematics and my M.B.A. degree in Finance from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.  After completing a Certificate of Professional Accountancy in 1975 from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, I passed the CPA exam and worked in Houston as a Certified Public Accountant [CPA] with a major international accounting firm.  After becoming a Christian, I accepted a call to professional ministry, while working as a Corporate Internal Auditor for Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company.  My family and I eventually traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, where I did M.DIV. Studies--short of a degree--at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  My desire to teach led me and my family to the state of North Carolina, where I began Ph.D. studies.  In 1994, I received my Ph.D. degree in Theology and Ethics from Duke University, under the supervision of Dr. Stanley Hauerwas.  My teaching career has spanned these sixteen years at Anderson University.  My academic and faith interests include but are not limited to the relationship of Christianity to culture, issues of biblical forgiveness and reconciliation, and the moral and ethical implications of racism, ethnocentrism, etc. to Christian witness.  I love to learn and I love to teach!

Currently, I serve as Associate Dean and Professor of Theology and Ethics at the Anderson University School of Theology, Anderson, Indiana.

I maintain membership in several academic and professional societies, while also serving on several community boards.  I serve as an associate minister at my local congregation, where I love “welcoming the stranger” or guests into the worship of God—a house of prayer for all people.

I have written several articles and reviews in professional and other journals.  I have written several Sunday School lessons for the curricula of the Church of God.  I am a frequent speaker and workshop leader in academic settings, conventions, and churches throughout the Midwest and South.
