TEXTS:

The Leadership Challenge, James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, Jossey-Bass Publishers, 2002, 3rd Edition.

COURSE FORMAT:

This course will provide a forum for an informed discussion of the principles and practices of leadership.  In each of our group meetings the instructor, group or designated topic leader will bring forth a topic(s) for discussion and/or debate from the platform of our common readings.  The class will work together on the issues being proposed, present personal or professional experiences that reinforce or challenge the perspective being discussed and arrive at new understandings that will help each of us to become more effective leaders.

Each student will have the opportunity to lead a discussion.  The discussion will be from our common readings in The Leadership Challenge or Tuesdays with Morrie.  As discussion leader, please be prepared to summarize the material, lead the class in a discussion of the readings focusing on personal relevance,  implications for professionals and any relationship that exists between the two books.  Be prepared to lead a one-hour discussion.  Feel free to use any method of presenting and discussing the material you feel appropriate.  Exercises, role plays, videos and other creative resources are encouraged!

Whether leading or participating, you are responsible for each day’s reading assignments.  Each person is expected to come to class with knowledge of the content and a willingness to engage in the conversation.  Prepare notes, record questions, and consult other sources which can elevate group learning.

Course Evaluation:  Participation

Both regular attendance and active dialogue and participation is considered vital to the learning experience of each student.  The overall seminar  will consist of eight, three-hour sessions.  While the instructor understands the unique needs, responsibilities and schedules of adult students, given the limited number of sessions, students will be expected to meet and participate in every session.  The student’s final grade will be lowered by one full grade for each absence unless the student completes an alternative assignment.  This alternative assignment will consist of a 3 to 4 page summary and application paper covering the readings listed for discussion for the session missed.  Students may only make up two sessions.  Remember that Saturdays consist of two sessions; morning and afternoon.

Course Evaluation:  Reality

This is a very short seminar.  It is also your final class.  Each student has a responsibility to keep up with the reading and to participate in class discussion.  This is important not only for you, but also for the other members of the seminar who cannot benefit without your input and ideas.  Come prepared to participate and have fun!!
