Course Description:

Effective administrators in a nonprofit setting must interact with multiple constituencies, provide mission and vision to the organization, make strategic decisions, access resources and support, and provide tools for daily action.  Topics for this course include marketing, strategic planning, grant writing, special event management, fund-raising, and community relations efforts.

Required Texts:

Tempel, E. R.  (2003).  Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising (Henry A. Rosso and Associates).  Jossey-Bass.  ISBN:  0-7879-6256-2.

Objectives of the Course:

  1. To gain an understanding of the unique aspects of planning and advancement in nonprofit organizations.

  1. To become aware of the importance of developing ethical fundraising activities which support the mission of the nonprofit agency.

  1. To understand the importance of a marketing philosophy in nonprofit agencies.

  1. To gain both a conceptual and “hands-on” understanding of the fund raising issues facing nonprofit managers.

  1. To examine His calling to be “salt” and “light” in our communities and organizations, as it relates to nonprofit management practices.

Requirements:

You are expected to come prepared and on time to every class session and to actively participate in class discussions.

Readings:  You are expected to complete all reading assignments by the dates noted in this syllabus.  I have designed our daily class discussions, and exercises with the assumption that you will come to class informed by your prior consideration of assigned reading materials.

Class Discussion:  To facilitate class discussion, it would be useful to take notes as you read the chapters.  At times there will be peer and self-assessments of your contribution to the discussion of assigned chapters.

Service Learning Activities:

Over the course of the semester, you will be assigned selected Activities to complete.  Your grade will be based on the content of the submission and completion by the due date.  Some questions will require you to network with individuals/organizations in the community.

Book Critique & Presentation:  Students will select and read a supplemental book on the topics of this course.  Each student will then prepare and submit a 2-3 page book critique and present an overview of the book to the class.  Your book critique, and your outline or copy of PowerPoint slides, will be due at the time of your presentation.

Indy Meeting Report:  Students will be required to attend a Professional Fund Raising meeting in Indy and submit a one-page reaction report.  Fee will range from $20-30.

Note:  Students having special problems that might affect their performance in class should notify the instructor during the first week of school.  Possible arrangements can be made to work closely with the Learning Center, a tutor, or special time provided by the instructor.
