Course Description:

This cou= rse provides an overview of the human resource management and leadership issues= in nonprofit organizations.  The = focus is on the topics of motivation, recruitment and selection of staff, board a= nd volunteer personnel.  Addition= ally, the course will address the topic of accountability to stakeholders.

Objectives of the Course:

1.  To gain an understanding of the un= ique aspects of managing nonprofit organizations.

&nb= sp;

2. To examine His calling to be “salt” and “light” in our communities and organizations, as it relates to management practices.

 

3.=   To assist you in developing a strong base of practical managerial sk= ills to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of nonprofit organizations.

 

4.   To gain both a conceptual and “hands-on” understanding of the issues facing nonprofit manager= s.

 

5.=   To gain an appreciation of the multiple roles played by staff, volunteers and board members in nonprofit organizations. =

 

Requirements:

You are = expected to come prepared and on time to every class session and to actively participate in class discussions.

Readings:&= nbsp; You are expected to complete all reading assignments by the dates no= ted in this syllabus.  I have desi= gned our daily class discussions, and exercises with the assumption that you will come to class informed by your prior consideration of assigned reading materials.

 

Discu= ssion Questions/Quizzes:=   Each chapter of the textbook concl= udes with Discussion Questions.  It= would be useful to take notes on theses questions as you read the chapter.  Selected questions will be used for in-class discussion and/or quizzes.  Quizzes may also cover material from in-class activities or articles.  You may use your no= tes, but not your book for these quizzes.  There will be no makeups for missed quizzes (unless pre-arranged), b= ut your lowest score will be dropped in final grading calculations.=

Artic= le Reports:  Pairs of students will jointly pre= pare and present a brief summary of an article relating to the topics of the class.  Prior to presenting, y= ou should submit a copy of the article and your outline or copy of PowerPoint slides.

Activ= ities:&= nbsp; Each chapter of the textbook concludes with suggested Activities.  Over the course of the semester, y= ou will be assigned selected Activities to complete.  Your grade will be based on the co= ntent of the submission and completion by the due date.  Some questions will require you to network with individuals in the community or your selected NP organization.=

NP Or= g. Activity Reports:<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  You will be required to submit 2 r= eports that summarize your activities with your selected NP organization.  The report should be two pages typ= ed and double-spaced.  The first page should provide a summary of your activity and the second page should reflec= t on your experience and include your thoughts, reactions, and ideas.

Term = Project:

Select a nonprofit organization to work with (NP Org. Activity):

-  Job shadow a manager in the organi= zation at least 3 hours.

-  Complete 5 hours of voluntary serv= ice with the organization.

-&= nbsp; Attend a board meeting of the organization or a community task force meeting involving the organization (ex. Homeless Task Force).

-  Interview stakeholders of the organization, and conduct research to prepare a SWOT analysis   &= nbsp; with recommendations.

This project will consist of an individual written report and class presentation= (15 minutes), which will give you the opportunity to do an in-depth study of the challenges and opportunities facing your selected NP organization.  You should be collecting informati= on for this project as you work with the NP organization.  Additionally, your research should include interviews of managers, employees, and clients of the NP organization.  The project wil= l also involve research of the trends and challenges facing the NP sector.  Think broadly and creatively.  Make this project a central part o= f your professional portfolio that you will be proud to show to potential employer= s in the future.  (More details wil= l be provided in class.)
