Course Description:
This cou=

provides an overview of the human resource management and leadership issues=
in
nonprofit organizations. The =
focus
is on the topics of motivation, recruitment and selection of staff, board a=
nd
volunteer personnel. Addition=
ally,
the course will address the topic of accountability to stakeholders.

Objectives of the Course:
1. To gain an understanding of the un=
ique
aspects of managing nonprofit organizations.
2. To examine His calling to be
“salt” and “light” in our communities and
organizations, as it relates to management practices.

To assist you in developing a strong base of practical managerial sk=
ills
to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of nonprofit
organizations.
4. To gain both a conceptual and
“hands-on” understanding of the issues facing nonprofit manager=
s.

To gain an appreciation of the multiple roles played by staff,
volunteers and board members in nonprofit organizations.

every class session and to actively participate in class discussions.

be useful to take notes on theses questions as you read the chapter. Selected questions will be used for
in-class discussion and/or quizzes.
Quizzes may also cover material from in-class activities or

not your book for these quizzes.
There will be no makeups for missed quizzes (unless pre-arranged), b=

your lowest score will be dropped in final grading calculations.

that summarize your activities with your selected NP organization. The report should be two pages typ=

double-spaced. The first page
should provide a summary of your activity and the second page should reflec=

your experience and include your thoughts, reactions, and ideas.

Select a
nonprofit organization to work with (NP Org. Activity):
- Job shadow a manager in the organi=
zation
at least 3 hours.
- Complete 5 hours of voluntary serv=
ice
with the organization.

Attend a board meeting of the organization or a community task force
meeting involving the organization (ex. Homeless Task Force).
- Interview stakeholders of the organization, and conduct research to prepare a SWOT analysis &= nbsp; with recommendations.
This
project will consist of an individual written report and class presentation=
(15
minutes), which will give you the opportunity to do an in-depth study of the
challenges and opportunities facing your selected NP organization. You should be collecting informati=
on for
this project as you work with the NP organization. Additionally, your research should
include interviews of managers, employees, and clients of the NP
organization. The project wil=
l also
involve research of the trends and challenges facing the NP sector. Think broadly and creatively. Make this project a central part o=
f your
professional portfolio that you will be proud to show to potential employer=
s in
the future. (More details wil=

provided in class.)
